News really fit to print
The slogan of New York Times has always been “All the news that’s fit to print.”
Now we’ve got a version of the Times with “news really fit to print.”
In one of the most beautiful send-ups of the mainstream media, the hoax edition of the New York Times makes you want to laugh or cry — I’m not sure which.
This now-celebrated venture hit the streets of New York on Friday morning, with volun teers handing out copies to commuters at Grand Central station and elsewhere in Manhattan.
The folks behind the hoax claim they’ve distributed 1.2 million copies.
As you can see, this is a beautiful replica of the real thing. The fake web site is just as delicious.
I especially enjoyed the story on the demise of the PR industry.
The moral behind all this seems to be that the fantasies reported here — the end of the war in Iraq, George Bush on trial for treason, universal health care in the U.S. – could become reality if people chose to make them so.
Ironic that something like this comes along just when a new President is preparing to take office. Maybe there’s hope after all!
